Spinal Cord Stimulation Specialist

Serving Hinsdale, Chicago, & Calumet City, IL

If you’re one of the more than 20 million Americans who regularly experience neuropathic pain, consider spinal cord stimulation. Spinal cord stimulation eases neuropathic pain by delivering tiny electrical pulses to an injured area of your body. At Pinnacle Pain Management Specialists, which has four locations throughout Chicagoland, including one in Hinsdale, Illinois, pain management expert Neeraj Jain, MD, uses spinal cord stimulation to treat a variety of common problems, including sciatica, diabetic neuropathy, and post-surgical pain. To schedule your appointment, call the office or book a consultation online today.

What is spinal cord stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation is a type of pain management that uses a special tool to direct targeted bursts of electrical energy that stimulate your spinal cord and surrounding nerves. Usually, Dr. Jain recommends this type of treatment to ease nerve pain caused by sciatica and diabetes.

Dr. Jain also uses spinal cord stimulation to treat:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Shingles

If you regularly experience pain as a result of nerve damage, and you’ve tried various measures of care without a significant improvement in your symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek professional medical help.

Am I a candidate for treatment with spinal cord stimulation?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for spinal cord stimulation, make an appointment at Pinnacle Pain Management Specialists.

Before making a recommendation, Dr. Jain reviews your medical history, asks you about your symptoms, and conducts a physical exam. After gathering all of the necessary information, he develops a custom care plan to align with your individual needs.

What happens during spinal cord stimulation?

If Dr. Jain determines you’re a good candidate for spinal cord stimulation, he recommends a trial placement. During a trial placement, Dr. Jain runs two small, pliable wires into the epidural space that runs next to your spine, a process that takes 30-40 minutes.

Once placed, each of the wires sends small bursts of electrical energy to your spinal nerves. This energy causes a pleasurable sensation that eases pain. Your trial placement lasts 3-5 days. During this time, you have complete control of your stimulator’s strength. Take notes, so you can tell Dr. Jain what works and what doesn’t.

Following your trial period, you return to Pinnacle Pain Management Specialists. If the treatment benefits you, Dr. Jain permanently installs the spinal cord stimulator during a quick outpatient operation. The spinal cord stimulator remains in your back, providing long term pain relief.

Is spinal cord stimulation treatment safe?

Treatment with spinal cord stimulation is safe and well-tolerated. However, the effectiveness of the device differs from person to person. This variance is why Dr. Jain recommends a trial period––it’s a great way to tell if your body responds or not.

Additionally, Dr. Jain can remove your spinal cord stimulator at any time. If you want to stop wearing it or try a different type of treatment, that’s perfectly alright.
