VIA Disc Specialist

Serving Hinsdale, Chicago, & Calumet City, IL

This procedure is a cutting-edge treatment available from Pinnacle Pain Management Specialists. For those who suffer from low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease or discogenic pain, this treatment could be an option for relieving the pain and potentially reversing the damage. This is a non-surgical treatment option that is minimally invasive and is done in an outpatient setting.

What Is VIA Disc?

VIA Disc is an injectable allograft that utilizes allogenic tissue and disc material to help repair degenerative discs in your back. This proven therapy has been shown in clinical trials to provide pain relief and repair degenerative discs, as well as improve function of the back.

This treatment is revolutionary because it was originally believed that there was no way to repair a degenerative disc. Age-related degeneration of the discs is caused by water loss and degeneration. Even though a degenerated disc is not immediately painful, the disc will start to develop cracks and other issues which make pain and further injury possible later on

How Does VIA Disc Work?

This therapy delivers allogeneic disc materia into the area of the back where you are experiencing pain. This causes the disc to heal and repair itself. A graft is created in the area where the treatment will happen. Over the course of several weeks, the allogeneic material from the injection will stimulate regeneration and repair within the defective disc.

Intervertebral discs deteriorate over time through aging and injury, causing loss of the protective tissue that connects each vertebrae. Your discs go through a dehydration process that is similar to the way grapes turn into raisins over time. As we age, our discs become more susceptible to stress, strains, and lower back pain. VIA Disc was pioneered to correct this issue.

Is VIA Disc Right For Me?

These types of treatments are generally well tolerated by patients and can be done with a local anesthetic in an outpatient setting. Depending upon the severity of disc degeneration, there may be some mild discomfort or pressure when the graft is injected. For some, the discomfort may only last during the procedure but it could persist for a few days or week after the procedure. Sometimes, you might be prescribed pain medications or muscle relaxers to deal with these issues. At Pinnacle Pain Management Specialists, any risk will be mitigated with proper preparation before the procedure.

How Many Treatments Will Be Required?

You will only need one treatment session to complete the VIA Disc procedure. Generally speaking, it will take several weeks for the treatment to begin to work.

What To Expect During the VIA Disc Procedure

Before the procedure, the injected material is carefully prepared. The provider may provide some antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection onset. The procedure is typically done under local anesthetic or moderate sedation. During the procedure, Dr. Jain will use a specialized type of tomography scan to see where the injection graft will be placed. VIA Disc is then slowly injected into the spine. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort and soreness. You will need to relax and take it easy for about 72 hours. After the procedure, to deal with discomfort and soreness, you may be prescribed some pain medications. A followup appointment will be scheduled within a few weeks to see the efficacy of the procedure.
