Epidural Steroid Injection
Serving Hinsdale, Chicago, & Calumet City, IL
For any number of reasons, people can experience pain that radiates from the back into the legs or even the arms and neck. When this pain becomes severe or chronic, such as with sciatica, an epidural steroid injection can bring enduring, life enhancing relief. An epidural steroid injection is a routine, minimally invasive outpatient medical procedure that successfully treats inflammations of spinal nerves. The medication courses through the epidural, which the space around the dura matter of the spinal cord. As it flows into the epidural, inflamed spinal nerves are soothed and pain is relieved.

Conditions Treated With Epidural Steroid Injection
A patient experiencing pain in one of more of the following areas might be a good candidate for pain management through an epidural steroid injection:
- The lower back area
- The trunk area of the body
- In one or more arm
- In one or more leg
- In the area of the neck
An epidural steroid injection is most effective for a variety of radicular pain. This is pain resulting from the irritation of a nerve root, or a nerve root that has become compressed. It’s called radicular because the pain feels as though it is “radiating” along one or more of the patient’s arms, legs or into the neck.
An epidural steroid injection is often a boon to sufferers of sciatica, who are very familiar with this debilitating pain that radiates into one or more of the legs. Patients with herniated discs or spinal stenosis, which is the narrowing of the spinal canal, also benefit from epidural steroid injection treatments. Sometimes osteoarthritis is treatable with epidural steroid injection therapy. Dr. Neeraj Jain, M.D., will advise you on treating your radicular pain with epidural steroid injection.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTION PROCEDURES
An epidural steroid injection treatment is fast and simple. A local anesthesia numbs the region before the injection is given, which takes just a matter of minutes to do. Dr. Jain will inject a small amount of medicine into the affected area of the spine. Recovery time is also very short. If you feel slight, temporary discomfort at first, there’s no need to worry. This is perfectly usual, and something that most paten describe as a sensation of slight pressure.
If you have any back surgeries in your history, an X-Ray will also be performed before the procedure. After the epidural steroid injection, you should be able to move about in a perfectly normal way. However, we strongly urge you to bring a person with you who can drive you after the procedure. No later than the next day, you ought to be to able function with complete normality. Any temporary soreness you may feel at the point of injection should be resolved by using an over-the-counter pain reliever or an ice pack.
HOW LONG WILL PAIN RELIEF LAST AFTER AN EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTION?
Pain relief after an epidural steroid injection treatment may last for days or even years, depending on each patient. Many people will require just one epidural steroid injection, while others may require one or two more.
