What is back pain?
Your spine contains 33 vertebrae, as well as dozens of muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. If these hard or soft tissues experience injury, illness, or inflammation, it can result in general discomfort or disability.
Back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems in the United States. Every year, it’s responsible for more than $100 billion in lost productivity. If you experience back pain as a result of a work-related accident or personal injury, seek treatment as soon as possible. Doing so could mean the difference between a quick recovery or a lengthy, painful treatment process.
What are the symptoms of back pain?
Back pain affects everyone differently and depends on the underlying cause. Some people experience sharp, stabbing, or electric-like pain; others experience pain that’s dull and throbbing. Common telltale signs of back pain include:
- Muscle aches
- Shooting pain
- Pain that radiates to the arms or legs
- Pain that worsens during physical activity
- Pain that improves while sitting or laying down
If you experience back pain, you might also find it difficult to perform routine tasks, such as taking out the trash, picking up your child, or climbing a flight of stairs.
Who is at risk of experiencing back pain?
Back pain affects people of all ages, races, and genders. However, certain factors may increase your risk, including being overweight, smoking, or having arthritis. You’re also more likely to experience back pain if you live a primarily sedentary lifestyle, or your job requires you to lift objects regularly. If lifting is a part of your daily routine, make sure to use proper form. This means lifting with your buttocks and legs, not your spine.
What is the process for diagnosing back pain?
To diagnose back pain, Dr. Jain reviews your medical history, asks you about your symptoms, and conducts a physical exam.
Depending on your individual needs, he might also ask you to walk around the exam room to observe your gait and posture or take X-rays or an MRI to get a closer look at your vertebrae and the soft tissues that support your spine.
How is back pain treated?
At Pinnacle Pain Management Specialists, Dr. Jain usually recommends conservative, integrative treatments to ease back pain. For example, he might recommend you lose weight, eat a more balanced diet, or exercise regularly.
If these steps don’t ease your symptoms, Dr. Jain might recommend joint injections, spinal cord stimulation, nerve blocks, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), or an intrathecal pump implant.
Don’t let back pain prevent you from participating in activities you love. Call the office at Pinnacle Pain Management Specialists to explore your treatment options or book an appointment online today.
